Over the month of November, I had a lot going on. Between working on a challenge for CIBC, to attending events at UofT, I’ve been trying my best to keep up on all fronts. With memorable events and new media intake, let’s take a dive 🤿 🏊♀️ into Stella’s month of November.
Monthly Mindset, and my 3-2-1s: 3 notable pieces of content, 2 memorable events, and 1 snapshot of my art.
Monthly Mindset - Done > Perfect🧠:
As I reflect on the mindset of "done is better than perfect," I can't help but think about all of the times that I have struggled with perfectionism. It can be SO easy to get caught up in trying to make everything just right and to believe that anything less than perfect is a failure. But the truth is, perfection is often unattainable, and striving for it can actually hold us back.
The mindset of "done is better than perfect" encourages us to focus on making progress and getting things done, rather than getting bogged down in the details and trying to make everything perfect. It helps us to recognize that sometimes good enough is actually good enough and that we don't always have to strive for perfection in order to be successful.
In my own life, I have found that adopting this mindset has helped me to be more productive and feel more confident in my work. It has allowed me to take risks and embrace failure as a learning opportunity, rather than letting fear hold me back.
Overall, I believe that the mindset of "done is better than perfect" is a valuable one that can help us to be more productive, to take on new challenges, and to feel more confident in ourselves and our abilities. It helps us to recognize that sometimes good enough is actually good enough and that we don't always have to strive for perfection in order to be successful.
3 Noteworthy Pieces of Content📚:
One of my favourite reads of this month would have to be George Orwell’s essay “Politics and the English Language”. I was working on a few essays recently and needed some writing inspiration, so as one does, I sought Orwell to help me out.
In a nutshell, Politics and the English Language is arguing that political language is watering down the English language, causing a decrease in the quality of personal thought. Through analyzing examples, he demonstrates the common laziness in writing which leads to deceptiveness.
Recently I’ve been listening to a lot more podcasts throughout my daily life. A new podcast I started this month is Smarter Every Day. Each episode introduces a new topic that Destin Sanland will teach you about. His episodes are calming and peaceful, creating a welcoming ambience. The first one I listened to was Listening Closely To Waterfalls, which has been my personal favourite so far. Take a listen!
Since we’re in fall, this month I’ve switched up my music taste. Less of the summery pop, now it’s into soft jazz and Sweater Weather type beats. If you like listening to fall vibes, join me!
2 Memorable Events 📸:
Venture Creation Workshop 🧬
This month I got the chance to attend Lamisa Mizan’s workshop on Venture Creation in Biotech at the University of Toronto. An exciting aspect of the event was the chance to do a case study and get feedback from students in the Biomed profession. I got to learn the key components and structure of thinking about the Hypothesis Generation Framework.
Precise
The “WHAT” – what is the product or platform?
Testable
The “HOW” – is this solution feasible? Can it be validated AND unvalidated?
Discrete
The “WHY” – is there an unmet need the idea will solve? What is the competitive landscape?
The Hypothesis Generation Framework is a tool that helps generate potential explanations or predictions for a given problem or question. This type of framework is useful because it helps identify potential causes or factors that may be contributing to the problem at hand, and it allows for a systematic and structured approach to generating and testing hypotheses.
Running an LTCH Program 👴
I got the opportunity to plan and run the fall program for a local Long-Term Care Home. As a part of the Youth Committee with the City of Toronto Care Homes, I take on the role to host different programs for the residents, and for the volunteers. This month, I gathered a group of students to help me execute my “🍂Fall Into Winter” day activity. We offered cookie decorating, colouring, and movie-watching for our residents. After Covid hit, many of the residents across Toronto became fell into a state of loneliness and depression. With safety precautions becoming lighter, hosting these events gives them a chance to interact and socialize with new people. In the end, it was a successful day for me, and especially for the residents. Although most of them weren’t allowed to eat the cookies (too much sugar for them 🍪) they had a good time.
